Linear Cross Belt Sorter

Linear Cross-Belt Sorter—Express Sorting Starts Here!

The central idea of deploying a linear cross-belt sorter is to leverage its special feature, the carrying surface:

The high-speed sorting conveyor has a continuous series of cells, called cross-belts, on which loads are placed. The key functionality of these cross-belts is that they act as bi-directional mini-conveyors—conveyors on an already-moving conveyor—activated only around the sorting checkpoint.

Core Functionality of Linear Cross-Belt Sorters

What makes the cross-belt a popular choice as a sorting mechanism is that the mini-conveyor has the flexibility to move both right and left. Hence, the payload can be dropped in chutes on both sides of the automation setup.

The Cross-Belt Edge—Why Quinta Experts Help Recommend Linear Cross-Belt Sorters

At Quinta, we understand that in e-commerce distribution and order fulfilment centres, the workforce must handle a variety of parcels—some more fragile than others.

As the bi-directional belt, i.e., the cross-belt cell carrying the load, moves left or right, depending on the bin’s direction, the shipment slides along with it. This mechanism allows the parcel to glide off or be carried off a surface, thereby minimising the impact of the drop.

Our experts use automated linear cross-belt sorters in logistics hubs dealing—to a certain extent, if not exclusively—with damage-prone parcels.

The types of shipments which require more careful handling include consumer electronics, delicate curios, cutlery, cosmetics, etc.

Unique Benefits of Linear Cross-Belt Sorters

Linear cross-belt sorters have many advantages apart from the peak throughput potential of the straight high-speed conveyors and the actuator’s low-impact sorting capability, which minimises shipment damage.

Linear cross-belt sorters, including the ones in Quinta’s solutions portfolio, have the following advantages over other sorters:

  • Compact Design Accommodating Several Bins: Coss-belts allow the maximal use of floor space for bin allocation, among all the linear sorter models, because the actuator—the bi-directional cells—is integrated seamlessly along the conveyor surface. In contrast, the actuators of other sorption solutions are bulkier than cross-belts. Also, these external actuators—distinct from the conveyor surface—have limited scope for movement: a restricted range of angles and a single direction, which, for example, is the case in swing arm sorter models. Without the flexibility that cross-belts offer, as is the case for swing arm actuators, the sorter bins would be required to be placed alternately on either side; the bins are kept adjacent to the pushers, leaving empty, wasted, valuable warehouse floor space on the other side of the conveyor.
  • Plain Carrying Surface Supporting Large Shipments: Unlike tilt tray sorters, where the carriers have size and weight limits, and swing arm actuators, which must nudge the shipments strategically to complete the sorting action, cross-belts offer a greater tolerance for shipment dimensions and weight.

The Unmissable Sorting Action by Cross-Belts: Sorting Advantage Beyond Impact Mitigation

Items such as polybags often absorb the force applied by actuators such as swing arms, without moving sufficiently for the sorting action to be completed. In the same scenario, even smaller packages may not be accurately sorted as the pusher may just scrape it or nudge it insufficiently because the parcel doesn’t directly come within its range of action.

Thanks to this “no nudge” sorting action, smaller parcels and polybags that may go unnoticed by other actuators are sorted as the cross-belt’s mini conveyor follows through with its sliding action.

Are Cross-Belts Exclusive to Linear Sorters?

It is indeed true that, much like in linear sorters, cross-belts are compatible with other sorter layouts, including the zig-zag carrying surfaces of Z-Type sorters, as well. The mechanism is universal.

Why Partner With Quinta?

Quinta, after years of being among the leading solution providers in the warehouse automation market, understands that industrial setups often can’t work with off-the-shelf designs. Our experts are adept at designing a wide range of automation solutions, including cross-belt-equipped non-linear sorters, which help balance space constraints against throughput requirements.

Industries Served

Regardless of the industry, the key consideration while selecting cross-belts should be whether low-impact sorting is required. For other scenarios like sorting heavy-duty crates or high-speed batching of assorted parcels, check out other sorters by Quinta and where they shine.
